In Connecticut, the paper work and fees required to apply for and receive your pistol permit can be daunting. For anyone wishing to obtain their pistol permit for the first time navigating through all of the paperwork, fingerprinting requirements, and fees can be confusing. If you’re missing any paperwork or separate checks and money orders your paperwork will be sent back, only to have you start the process over again.
Typically, the fees for applying for your pistol permit in Connecticut require separate money orders made out to different government agencies that are responsible for processing different parts of the paperwork, background checks and fingerprints.
The cost schedule has previously been:
- $70 Certified Check or Money Order made payable to your local town or local police
- $50 Certified Check or Money Order made payable to the Treasurer, State of Connecticut
- a second $14.75 Certified Check or Money Order also made payable to the Treasure, State of Connecticut, which gets passed through to the FBI for their portion of the fingerprinting background check process
Please be advised that one of the permit fees will change price on October 1, 2016. The $14.75 fee (for your FBI fingerprint check) will decrease to $12.00.
If you obtain(ed) an application prior to the fee change date, the old fee structure will still be printed on the application. The fee will change on October 1, 2016, regardless of when your application was first obtained.
According to the Orange, CT Police Department, this is due to a change made at the FBI level, and passed down to all state and municipal police agencies.
